Federal Judge Blocks Administration’s Move To Extend Powers Of Immigration Officers
Last Friday federal judge Ketanji Brown Jackson from San Diego, blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to extend authority of immigration officers to deport people without allowing them to appear before judges.
The “expedited removal” procedure had previously been used to quickly send recent border-crossers back to Mexico, limiting its use to individuals apprehended within 100 miles of the U.S. border and who were determined to have crossed into the U.S. illegally.
This new policy was intended to relieve the burden on the immigration courts and the Justice Department as well as freeing up bed space in immigration detention centers.
In her decision the judge wrote “There is no evident consideration of the considerable downsides of adopting a policy that, in many respects, could significantly impact people’s everyday lives in many substantial, tangible, and foreseeable ways.”
