10,000 U Visas Approved by USCIS already run out
For the sixth consecutive year USCIS has approved for fiscal year 2015, 10,000 U-1 non-immigrant visas. The statuary maximum of 10,000 ran out before the government of the U.S. could make them available.
More than 16,000 had petitioned and been pre-approved, so many applicants were not covered and USCIS will continue to review pending petitions for eligibility.
USCIS will be sending these petitioners a letter informing them that they will be placed on a waiting list for when the U visas become available. These visas will become available again on October 1, 2015, the first day of Fiscal Year 2016. All eligibility requirements must still be met by the petitioners and their family members while they are still on the waiting list.
The U visas have been created for victims of crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are willing to cooperate with the enforcement authorities investigating and finally prosecuting those crimes. A certification will be issued to this effect.
