Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization

When you wish to become a U.S. citizen but grew up in another nation, you may be able to pursue U.S. citizenship through a process called naturalization, provided you and your situation meet certain eligibility requirements. You have the option of filing for citizenship either online or on paper, and you may need to fill out certain forms and pay certain fees when you do so.

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, you must be at least 18 when you file for U.S. citizenship through naturalization. You also must meet the following additional eligibility requirements.

Determining naturalization eligibility

You must have a firm grasp of how to write, read and communicate in English to pursue U.S. citizenship through naturalization. You also must demonstrate good moral character and offer evidence of your understanding of U.S. history and governmental operations. Furthermore, you must maintain a physical and residential presence in the country, show loyalty to the principles of the U.S. Constitution and take an Oath of Allegiance dictating as much.

Filing and submitting your forms

The exact steps you must take to file for naturalization are going to depend on whether you do so online or on paper. However, you must submit all requested paperwork and documentation and sign necessary forms and pay necessary fees, regardless of which naturalization route you take. You may also want to create an account with USCIS to receive real-time updates about your filing status.

Once you submit all necessary documentation, fees and paperwork, you should receive a confirmation that USCIS it. You may, depending on circumstances, have to appear for an interview to determine the next steps.
