Immigrants looking to call Texas home permanently will need to apply for a green card. Also called a permanent residency card, a green card allows an immigrant to become a lawful permanent resident of the United States. While many people desire to be granted a green card, not every person is deemed eligible to obtain one. You must fit within the following categories.

Apply through your family

Green cards can be awarded to immediate relatives of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. When it comes to marriage, it can play a role in your eligibility as well. Any immigrant whose fiancé is a U.S. citizen is eligible. In addition, any widower of a U.S. citizen is eligible.

Apply through employment

Some immigrants are eligible to apply for a green card through their source of employment. To be eligible, one must classify as an immigrant worker, immigrant investor or a physician with a national interest waiver.

Be deemed a special immigrant

The U.S. government allows those deemed special immigrants to apply for a green card. These include those classified as a special immigrant juvenile, religious worker, international broadcaster, employee or former employee of an international organization or NATO, or an Afghanistan or Iraq national.

Claim asylum

Persons who sought asylum in the United States are eligible for a green card. Those who were admitted as a refugee at least one year ago are also eligible.

Individuals who are looking to live permanently in the United States will want to apply for a green card. Anyone who fits into the categories above may be eligible for submitting an application for a green card.
