September 15 is also the anniversary of five Latin American countries; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Mexico declared their independence on September and Chile on September 18.

According to the census there are approximately 54 million Hispanic Americans in the country and it is the largest minority group. This figure represents nearly 1 in 3 Americans. If this figure continues to increase as the same rate there could be approximately 120 million Hispanic-Americans by 2060.

Starting with the discovery of America on October 12, 1492 by Christopher Columbus, the Hispanic Heritage month celebrates the presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans and their contribution to American culture and society.

In 2014 President Obama expressed how “Hispanics represent a vibrant and thriving part of our diverse Nation. Their histories and cultures stretch across centuries, and the contributions of those who come to our shores today in search of their dreams continue to add new chapters in our national story.”
