Untold Numbers of Veterans Deported

It is difficult to calculate the untold number of veterans who have been living legally in the U.S. for years, honorably serving this country, who have been deported without receiving assistance from the federal government.

According to news reports from EFE and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the federal government’s failure to help naturalize immigrants serving in the U.S. military, all of whom are entitled to become citizens because of their service to this country, has led to the deportation of an untold number of veterans.

Some of these deported veterans suffered deep physical and emotional wounds and once they returned from service, they were subject to punitive laws dating back some 20 years, reclassifying minor offenses as deportable crimes. This would not have occurred if the government had ensured their right by serving in the military, to be naturalized U.S. citizens.

Consequences of this deportation status also results in lack of access to necessary Veterans medical benefits which they desperately need and permanent separation from their families, many with U.S. born children, adding to the emotional trauma.

U.S. Army Veteran David Garcias in a statement to ACLU says that these veterans “Spent their lives in the United States, honorably serving this country, only to be treated harshly and unjustifiably punished based solely on where they were born.”

Another hot topic for this general election year; these veterans are neither criminals nor are they undocumented yet they have been discharged and then discarded.
